Be fully prepared for the decisions that lie ahead

If you are a British expat and have one or more pensions in the UK, you will no doubt be aware of the overhaul to the UK pensions system.

Until recently most non-UK residents with pensions in the UK either used their pension pots to buy an annuity, or transferred their funds to an overseas pension scheme, such as a QROPS.

However, under new government proposals introduced earlier this year you will soon be able to access and use your pot in any way you wish once you reach 55. Between now and 6 April 2015 when the new rules come into effect, interim rules apply which provide you with more choice about how much of your pension pot you can cash in.

While your pension provider should provide you with details about your options both before and after April 2015, these details will not include options which are available exclusively for non-UK residents, for example Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS).
