I want to invest in a US ETF but haven't found a broker who will help, is it possible?

Watch: Can American expats invest in US ETFs?

A short video explaining whether investing in a US ETF is possible for for US citizens living in the UK.

Investing in a US ETF is an option, though you will want to make sure you're choosing a tax-efficient fund by using the HMRC reporting funds list.

Additionally, an advisor will need to jump through hoops and take personal risk to do this for a client. For this reason, a lot of brokers don’t want to do it – even the large firms.

Ultimately, this means you're left with two options. The first option is to see if there's a broker in the US who will help. The second is to talk to a specialist firm in the UK who will be happy to see if we can help.

Also, unless it is a reporting fund in the UK, any gains from that ETF would be taxable at income tax rates in the UK. In this case, you'd have to look carefully to make sure that that is a reporting fund and not a non-reporting fund.
